The Look of Stone, Poured in One Piece

Stamped Concrete lets a patio, front walk or driveway edge look like cut stone, slate, cobble, brick or wood planks while staying a single monolithic slab. Nothing can shift, and there are no paver gaps for weeds to fill. Around Bloomington, where pale Indiana limestone shows up in walls, foundations and trim, an ashlar or flagstone pattern in a warm gray or buff often sits naturally beside the house.

How stamping works

Under the pattern it is an ordinary slab: excavation, compacted stone, forms and steel. Color is typically added at the batch plant (integral color) so it runs through the full depth. After the concrete is placed and floated, a contrasting release agent, either powder or liquid, goes on the surface. It stops the mats from sticking and settles into the low spots as darker accents. Then the textured rubber mats are laid down and pressed in sequence while the slab is at the right firmness. That timing window decides the result: press too soon and the texture sags, wait too long and the mat barely marks it. Hand tools finish the edges and corners.

After the pour

Once the slab sets, joints are cut along the pattern lines where they are hardest to see. After curing, the leftover release is washed off and the surface gets a sealer. The sealer brings out the color, protects it from UV and keeps water and salt out. On stamped concrete, the sealer is part of the finish, not an extra.

Stamped concrete and winter

A stamped slab is as strong as any other, but the texture and sealer change how it behaves in a Bloomington winter. A high-gloss sealer can get slippery when wet or icy, so on walks and steps we mix a grit additive into it. Freeze-thaw and de-icers wear on every exterior slab, stamped or not. Use sand rather than salt, above all in the first winter, and expect to reseal every two to three years. Kept up, the color holds; ignored, it fades and the surface can start to scale.

Pattern and color choices

Broad patterns such as ashlar slate or large flagstone suit bigger patios. Tighter patterns such as brick or cobble suit walks and borders. A contrasting band around the edge, often smooth or brick-pattern, frames the main field and gives it a finished look. Samples come to the estimate so you can judge them in your own daylight next to your siding or stone. Expect the colors to deepen once sealed.

What to expect on cost

Stamped concrete costs more than plain concrete because of the color, release, stamp work, extra crew time and sealer. HomeGuide's patio guide lists stamped concrete at about $9 to $30 per square foot installed, and its driveway guide lists stamped driveways at $8 to $26. Complex patterns, multiple colors and borders push toward the high end.

Keeping it looking right

Rinse and sweep it often. Plan a fresh coat of sealer every two or three years, or as soon as water soaks in rather than beading up. Use sand, not salt, for traction. Lift patio furniture instead of dragging it, and wipe up grease or oil quickly before it gets into the sealer.

What Stamped Concrete Covers

A stamped job adds color, texture and sealing to a standard slab build.

Integral color

Pigment added to the whole batch, so color goes through the slab instead of sitting on top.

Release and antiquing

A second color that keeps stamps from sticking and adds depth to the pattern.

Pattern stamping

Slate, ashlar, flagstone, cobblestone, brick or wood plank pressed into fresh concrete.

Borders and bands

Contrasting edges that frame a patio, walk or driveway.

Sealer with grip

A clear protective coat, with grit mixed in on walks and steps for footing.

Stamped Concrete Questions

Is stamped concrete slippery?

When wet or icy, sealed stamped concrete can be slick. On walks and steps we put a grit additive in the sealer, and in busy foot-traffic areas we can steer you toward a more textured pattern.

How often does stamped concrete need sealing?

Plan on every two to three years, or when water stops beading. Sealing keeps the color strong and protects the surface from water, freeze-thaw and salt.

Does stamped concrete crack?

It can, as all concrete can. Joints are cut along the pattern's grout lines so any cracking follows the design and stays hard to spot.

Can you stamp my existing patio?

No. Stamping needs fresh concrete. A sound existing slab can take a stamped overlay or a stain instead, while a damaged one is better removed and replaced.

How much more does stamped cost than plain concrete?

In HomeGuide's patio guide, plain concrete runs $4 to $12 per square foot against $9 to $30 for stamped. The gap comes from the color, the stamping labor and the sealer.
