Concrete Along the Clear Creek Valley

Clear Creek is an unincorporated community in Perry Township, just south of Bloomington, and its homeowners need concrete contractors who pay attention to water. The community takes its name from Clear Creek, which crosses downtown Bloomington in underground pipes, comes out near the south edge of downtown, runs across the south half of the city, then flows through Clear Creek on its way to Salt Creek south of Harrodsburg. Wikipedia lists the community's elevation at 663 feet, well below Bloomington's 804.

Water first, then concrete

Being downhill from a city changes how a yard drains. Rain that falls upslope has to go somewhere, and a driveway or patio that blocks it can end up with water ponding against it or running underneath. Before we set forms in Clear Creek, we walk the lot and look for:

  • Low spots where water already collects after a storm
  • Downspouts that dump right where the new slab will go
  • Swales or ditches that the new concrete must not cut off
  • Signs of soil washing out from under an existing slab

Then we set the finished grade so water moves across and off the concrete and keeps going downhill.

Karst nearby

The land around Bloomington is limestone karst. West of the city, Sinking Creek disappears into the ground and comes back up at Leonard Springs and Shirley Springs, according to Wikipedia's Clear Creek article. In this kind of ground, water moving downward can carry soil into openings in the rock over time. Good compaction, reinforcement and drainage do not remove that risk, but they help a slab hold together if the ground below it shifts a little.

Driveways for a short commute

Because Clear Creek sits right next to Bloomington, many homes here are commuter homes with daily traffic in and out. Replacing a worn driveway is a typical project for that kind of household. We break out the old surface, haul it away, rebuild the base where it has thinned, and pour a new drive with control joints cut at regular spacing. Where the old drive was asphalt, the switch to concrete usually means less patching and resealing over the years.

Patios, walks and stamped finishes

Backyards along the creek valley often slope toward the water. A patio pour here usually needs some fill on the low side and a careful grade. If you want a decorative surface, stamped concrete can mimic flagstone or slate, which fits a wooded setting. We also pour simple broom-finish walks from the drive to the door and from the back door to a shed or garden.

Garage and shed slabs, and repairs

A garage slab or shed pad is a good place to get the drainage right from the start. We raise the slab slightly above the surrounding grade so water stays out. For older concrete, we fix:

  • Steps that have pulled away from the house
  • Slabs that have dropped at one corner
  • Surfaces that have scaled or flaked after years of winter salt
  • Cracks that let water under the slab

Clear Creek has had a post office since 1870, and the Clear Creek Christian Church dates to 1839, so some homes and their walks here have been around a long time. Older concrete often has no reinforcement at all, which we keep in mind when deciding whether to repair or replace. Call (812) 286-8782 for a visit.

Clear Creek Questions

Water pools by my garage after rain. Can a new slab fix it?

Often, yes. We can set the new slab slightly higher than the yard and pitch it away from the door. If water comes from upslope, we may also suggest a swale or a downspout extension so the problem does not move somewhere else.

Is karst a reason not to pour concrete in Clear Creek?

No. It is a reason to prepare well. We remove soft soil, compact a stone base in layers, add reinforcement and manage drainage, which together give a slab a far better chance of staying in one piece.

Should I replace my asphalt driveway with concrete?

Concrete costs more up front but needs no sealcoating and holds its shape in summer heat. If the asphalt base is sound, we can sometimes reuse part of it after checking compaction.
