Morgantown's Streets and Slabs
Morgantown is one of the older towns we serve, and concrete contractors here mostly work on homes that have been occupied for a long time. Robert Bowles and Samuel Teeters platted the first 52 lots in March 1831, a post office has operated since 1833, and the town incorporated in 1906. The Morgantown Historic District went on the National Register in 2006. The 2020 census counted 1,014 people and 416 homes.
Almost every house is occupied
Morgantown's 2020 rental vacancy rate was 0.6% and its homeowner vacancy rate was 3.2%. In a town where nearly every home is in use, concrete work has to fit around daily life. We plan pours so you can still get in and out of the house, we tell you how long to stay off new concrete (usually a day or two for foot traffic and about a week for cars), and we keep the street side clean.
Two state roads through town
State Road 252 runs through the center of town as Washington Street and leads 10 miles northwest to Martinsville, the county seat. State Road 135 shares that route, then turns south on Marion Street toward Nashville. Homes along these roads often have driveways that open onto state highways. Work at the edge of a state road can need state approval, so we look into that before touching an apron.
Indian Creek along the south edge
Indian Creek follows the south side of town and runs west to meet the White River below Martinsville. Lots near the creek can stay wet after heavy rain. For a patio, driveway or garage slab near low ground, we:
- Strip out wet or organic soil
- Build a thicker crushed stone base
- Set the slab high enough to shed water
- Leave a clear path for runoff around the new concrete
Walks and steps in the historic core
In a town laid out in 1831, the front walk and steps are often the oldest concrete on the lot. Typical issues include walks that tip toward the house, steps with uneven risers and stoops that have separated from the foundation. We take out the failing pieces and pour new ones with a proper base. A broom finish and tooled edges look right next to older houses.
Concrete next to brick and stone
Many older Morgantown homes have brick or stone foundations and porches. Where new concrete meets them, we place an isolation joint so the slab can move with the seasons without pushing on the masonry. We also make sure the new surface slopes away from the wall.
A practical order for older properties
If several pieces of concrete need attention, we suggest a sequence. Fix the front steps and any trip hazards first, since those are safety issues. Then fix anything sending water toward the house, such as a patio pitched the wrong way. Driveways and decorative work can follow. Splitting the work into stages lets you spread out the cost.

Morgantown Questions
How long until I can drive on a new Morgantown driveway?
Walking is usually fine within a day or two. Wait about a week before parking a car on it, and longer for heavy trucks. Exact timing depends on the temperatures the week we pour.
My driveway opens onto SR 135. Does that change anything?
Work at the edge of a state highway can need state approval. We look into it for your address before we work on the apron.
Can you match an old walk's look?
We can use a broom finish, tooled edges and joint spacing similar to the old walk. New concrete is lighter at first and darkens a bit with age.
