Martinsville Homes and Concrete
Martinsville is the largest town in the northern part of our area, and concrete contractors here see a wide range of homes. The census counted 11,828 residents in 2010 and 11,932 in 2020, with 5,281 housing units, 7.5% vacant. QuickFacts lists an owner-occupied rate of 63.3% for 2020 to 2024. Most homes are lived in by the people who own them, which shapes the work toward driveways, patios and repairs owners plan to live with for years.
A bigger city since 2014
In 2014 a local judge upheld the city's annexation of enough land to grow Martinsville by about a third, turning I-69 into the city's frontage road. Annexed areas tend to include larger lots with longer drives, outbuildings and room for a patio. Inside the older city, lots are smaller and walks and steps are older. We work in both.
Old fish farms and low ground
Martinsville sits at about 604 feet. In 1899, Eugene Shireman turned swampland into fisheries, and those fish farms still shape parts of the area. Land that was once wet can still hold water. Before we pour on a lot like that, we:
- Look for soft, wet or organic soil and dig it out
- Build up a compacted crushed stone base
- Raise the finished slab enough that water flows off it
- Point downspouts away from the new concrete
Stamped patios and outdoor space
Martinsville has hot, humid summers, according to Wikipedia's climate description, so a back patio gets a lot of use. Stamped concrete is a popular choice for a patio that looks like stone or brick. We help you pick a pattern and color, place the joints where they blend into the pattern, and seal it once it cures. Plain broom-finish patios cost less and are easier to maintain.
Historic downtown
The Morgan County Courthouse, a red brick Italianate building finished in 1859, is one of the few pre-Civil War courthouses left in Indiana, and Wikipedia counts more than a dozen Martinsville places on the National Register. Older houses near downtown often need new front walks and steps. On those we keep risers even, pitch treads to drain and broom the surface for grip. From 1888 until 1968 the town drew visitors to its artesian mineral water, part of why the older blocks hold so much early housing.
Garage floors that stay dry
A garage slab should sit a little above the driveway and pitch gently toward the door, so melting snow from a parked car runs out instead of pooling. When we replace a Martinsville garage floor, we check that pitch and the joint where the floor meets the apron.
Drainage on annexed and rural lots
Larger lots in the areas added in 2014 often have long, gently sloped yards. Gentle slopes can be harder to drain than steep ones, because water moves slowly and sits. For a driveway or patio on a lot like that, we check the fall across the whole area with a level and set the slab so water has a clear path off it. Where the yard itself holds water, a shallow swale beside the slab can move it along. We point out any downspouts that dump water toward the new concrete and suggest extensions. These small steps add little to the cost of a pour and do a lot to keep the slab from settling.

Martinsville Questions
My yard stays wet. Can you still pour a patio?
Yes, with extra prep. We remove soft soil, build a thicker stone base and raise the patio so water flows off it. We may also suggest a downspout extension or swale to move water away.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
When wet, sealed stamped concrete can be slick. Mixing a fine grit into the sealer improves footing around pools and on steps.
Can you widen my driveway?
Yes. We tie the new section in with dowels or separate it with an isolation joint, depending on the existing slab's condition.
