Mitchell, Where the Rails Crossed

Mitchell grew up where two railroads met, and concrete contractors here deal with the mix of older town lots and newer homes that history left behind. The north-south Monon line and the east-west Ohio and Mississippi Railway, finished in 1857, crossed at Mitchell. The town incorporated in 1864 and became a city in 1907. In 2020 it had 3,933 residents and 1,895 housing units, 11.0% of them vacant. It sits at about 682 feet.

A cement town

Mitchell has a direct tie to our trade. Heidelberg Materials completed a large cement plant there in 2023, described on Wikipedia as the second-largest cement plant in the U.S. Cement is only one part of concrete, though. What makes a driveway or walk last is how the concrete is mixed, placed, finished and cured, and how well the ground under it was prepared. That is the part we control on every job.

Cave country underfoot

Spring Mill State Park, just east of Mitchell, includes several caves, a pioneer village and a memorial to astronaut Gus Grissom. Caves are a sign of limestone ground that water has dissolved over time. In that kind of ground, soil under a slab can slowly wash into openings below. We do three things on every Mitchell pour to help: 1. Dig out soft or loose soil and replace it with compacted crushed stone 2. Add reinforcement so a slab can span a small low spot instead of snapping 3. Direct roof and yard water away from the slab, since moving water is what carries soil off

Sidewalks and steps in the older city

Many homes in Mitchell's older blocks have walks and steps that are decades old. Older concrete often lacks air entrainment and was laid on a thin base, so it flakes and heaves. We replace failing walk panels, pour new front steps with even risers and form landings big enough to stand on while you open the door.

Driveways, patios and garages

  • Concrete Driveways: full replacements, widening and new parking pads
  • Concrete Patios: broom finish or colored surfaces for back yards
  • Stamped Concrete: stone and slate patterns for patios and walks
  • Garage & Shed Slabs: reinforced floors for garages, shops and sheds
  • Concrete Repair & Replacement: sunken sections, cracks and spalled surfaces

If a slab has settled near a downspout or a low corner of the yard, we fix the water problem as part of the job.

Curing makes the difference

Concrete gains strength as it cures, and it needs moisture to do that. A slab that dries out too fast in summer sun or wind ends up with a weak, dusty surface that scales early. We cure Mitchell slabs with a curing compound or by keeping them damp, and we tell you how long to keep cars off the new surface.

Rental and vacant homes

With 8.6% rental vacancy in 2020, some Mitchell properties change hands or tenants often. Turnover is a natural time to fix trip hazards, crumbling steps and broken drives, before a new tenant moves in or a sale closes. We give a clear, itemized quote so you can decide what to do now and what can wait. Call (812) 286-8782 to schedule a visit.

Mitchell Questions

Does living near caves mean my slab will sink?

Not necessarily. Most slabs on limestone ground hold up fine when the base is compacted, the concrete is reinforced and water is kept away. If you already see a low spot forming, we look at drainage first.

Can you fix just the crumbling front steps on a rental?

Yes. We often replace only the steps or a few walk panels. We quote the repair on its own so you can budget the rest later.

What goes into a driveway that lasts in Mitchell?

A compacted stone base, the right thickness for your vehicles, an air-entrained mix, control joints at regular spacing and proper curing. Sealing after the cure adds protection against salt.
